Older Maytag top-loaders

The classic Maytag top-loader is a mechanical machine: a motor, a belt or direct drive, a transmission and a timer. Faults are usually mechanical and visible once the cabinet is open — a worn belt, a tired transmission, a failing pump or a timer that no longer advances.

Owners are often attached to these machines, and reasonably so. If the part is available and the cabinet and tub are sound, repair is frequently the sensible choice.

Current Maytag washing machines

Newer Maytag washers use electronic controls, load sensing and, on top-load models, a lid lock that engages before spin. Their symptoms often present as the machine refusing to proceed rather than as an obvious mechanical failure.

Front-load Maytag machines follow the pattern of other front-loaders: the door lock, the boot seal, the drain pump and the bearings are the usual points of interest.

Symptoms we hear about most

A burning smell is the one to act on immediately: stop using the machine, unplug it if you can do so safely, and call.

• The washer hums or clicks when a cycle starts but nothing moves.
• The load comes out heavy and dripping because the final spin never reached full speed.
• Water is left standing in the tub after the cycle finishes.
• There is a burning-rubber smell or a squeal from a belt-driven machine.
• The lid lock cycles repeatedly instead of engaging.
• The machine leaks around the base during the wash portion of the cycle.

What to have ready when you call

Tell us the approximate age of the machine, whether it is a top-loader with an agitator, a top-loader with a flat impeller, or a front-loader, and what the machine does at each stage of the cycle. Add the model number if you can find it under the lid or on the rear panel.

That handful of details is enough for a technician to arrive with a working hypothesis, which usually means a shorter visit.
