Three generations under one badge
Older Whirlpool top-loaders use a motor, a transmission and a mechanical or early electronic timer. They are mechanically straightforward, parts are often still available, and they are frequently worth repairing.
Newer high-efficiency top-loaders use much less water, sense the load, and lock the lid during spin. Their faults tend to be electrical or sensor-related rather than mechanical, and a locked lid or an unhappy sensor can stop the machine entirely.
Whirlpool front-loaders behave more like other front-load machines: door lock, boot seal, drain pump and bearings are the usual areas of interest.
