Common reasons a washing machine will not empty

• A drain pump filter clogged with lint, coins, buttons or hair.
• A drain hose that is kinked, crushed behind the machine, or pushed too far into the standpipe.
• An object caught in the pump, sometimes accompanied by a rattling sound.
• A drain pump that has failed and no longer runs.
• A blockage in the household drain or standpipe rather than in the washer.
• A control or sensing fault meaning the pump is never commanded to run.

Is it the washer or the plumbing?

This is worth establishing early, because it decides who you should call. If the machine pumps water out but it backs up out of the standpipe or the laundry sink, the drain line is the more likely problem. If the machine sits silent with full drum and no water moves at all, attention shifts to the washer.

Listen during the drain portion of the cycle. A pump that runs makes an audible whirr. Silence where you would expect that sound is a meaningful clue.

Safe steps before calling

Do not attempt to open the pump housing, remove panels or work on wiring. Those steps belong to a technician.

• Switch the machine off and, if you can reach the plug safely without standing in water, unplug it.
• Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks or crushing.
• Confirm the hose is not inserted so deep into the standpipe that it creates a siphon or blockage.
• If your machine has an owner-accessible drain filter, clean it following the manual, with a tray and towels ready.
• Note any error code displayed.

Getting the water out safely

A drum full of water is heavy and awkward. If the door is locked, do not force it — front-load machines keep the door sealed precisely because there is water behind it.

Where a machine offers a documented drain-down procedure through its filter access, the manual will describe it. Otherwise it is reasonable to leave the water in place until a technician arrives; they will drain the machine as part of the visit.

Why it should not be left

Water left standing in a drum turns stale quickly and can leave an odour in the seal and drum that outlasts the repair itself. On a front-loader, a locked door also means the laundry inside stays wet. It is worth resolving promptly rather than living around it.
