A washer that won't start is frustrating precisely because there is so little to go on. If you are facing a washer that won't start in Albuquerque, the first useful step is deciding which of three situations you actually have.
Is the machine completely dead with no lights at all? Does it light up but ignore the start button? Or does it accept the cycle and then sit there without filling or turning? Each points in a different direction.
When nothing at all happens, the question is whether power is reaching the machine. A tripped breaker, a switched-off outlet or a partly unplugged cord account for a fair share of these calls, and all are safe to check.
If the outlet is confirmed live and the machine is still completely unresponsive, the fault is inside — the inlet wiring, a thermal device or the control. That is a technician's job; do not open the cabinet.
This is the more common version, and it usually means the machine is waiting for a condition it has not received.
The door or lid interlock is the leading candidate: if the machine cannot confirm the door is secure, it will not proceed. A control lock or child lock may be engaged. A delay-start setting may be active. The water supply may be shut off, leaving the machine waiting for a fill that never comes.
Do not test outlets by improvising, work on wiring, or remove panels. If the checks above do not resolve it, the remaining possibilities all require testing under power.
A machine that begins and then halts within a minute or two is telling you something different again. It may not be receiving water, may not be able to confirm the door is locked, or may be detecting a condition it will not run through.
Note how far it gets and how long it lasts. That timing is genuinely useful diagnostic information for the technician.
